The Question:I searched the FAQ's and couldn't find the answer to this one. I just very recently started going to the gym. Two days ago I did chest exercises which included bench presses and lying flat dumbell flies. Since then the inside of my arms where they bend between the forearms and the biceps are killing me. I can barely straighten my arms out without it hurting. I didn't think I was using too much weights as I was able to complete 3 sets of 12 on each exercise without too much trouble. This has happened before when doing dumbell curls and preacher curls etc. Am I going too far down on the exercises? I'll be honest, I also didn't stretch beforehand. Any help or comments would be praised. The Answer:I don't want to make this sound too simple but you are using a little too much weight to start out with.
Sometimes it is difficult to gage how a person will respond to a program. You may have a pretty aggressive personality (type A) and you have a certain intensity that you are used to working at. If you took some times off from training and just recently got back into it you probably just went too hard too soon.
Warming up properly and doing stretching exercises will definitely help to reduce muscle soreness and injuries but sometimes no matter how much stretching you do you will still get sore if you do too much. Just reduce the weight on these exercises by 10% or at least to a level where you don't have to struggle very much to complete the reps for the first week or two of a program. Then, you can start pushing yourself around the 3rd week.
Until then, just make sure that you hydrate yourself properly and get enough protein and complex carbs in your diet to help your muscles recover and respond to your exercise program!
