The Question:

I have been using a juicer for about a year and I believe that it has helped as far as keeping colds and flu at bay. I feel much better since I started drinking the juice. I usually combine 2 oranges and 3 carrots in it and drink it every other day. How do I figure this into my diet. I just started the "Get Lean" program and I need to lose approx. 10-15lbs. I do eat salads and other vegetables so that I get additional fiber and nutrients.

The Answer:

Figuring juice into your diet simply involves determining the caloric content of the juice. If you are supposed to be taking in 2,800 calories per day and the juice makes up about 250 calories of this daily total then, this is your answer. You will have to determine the specific amount of calories that your juice adds up to. You can find a bunch of help on this by going to our nutrition section at

and clicking on the searchable food data base area.

While I feel that the vitamins and minerals of juicing are excellent I do not believe that the high level of sugar (even though it is natural) that comes in the juice is condusive to weight loss. You just have to be aware of stabalizing your blood sugar levels and balancing your caloric intake with some quality protein and unsaturated fatty acids into your diet at well. You can read about the importance of blood sugar stabilization in "Enter The Zone" and "Nutrition Made Simple". The second book is in my recommended readings list at http://www.fitrex.com/dan_books.shtml
