The Question:

I am a 54 year old male who has been lifting weights for 10 years. I workout at 4:30 each morning for one hour, 5 days per week. Since I've been fasting for seven hours, what supplements, and food before and after the workout do you recommend? Just discovered you web site today, and it's the best I've seen when it comes to fitness!

The Answer:

Not knowing exactly what type of workout you will be doing, I could safely recommend that you simply drink 8-12 ounces of water and have a piece of peanut butter toast on whole wheat. This is a nice little combination. Or, you could drink a small meal replacement packet such as Myoplex Lite. This product has high quality carbohydrates and protein to give you the energy needed to get a good workout.
After your workout I always like to eat a piece of fruit and take in a good protein source like cottage cheese or another full size meal replacement packet like Met-Rx or Myoplex.

It sounds like I am constantly eating these meal replacement packets with my response. It's just that I usually have a meal replacement packet for breakfast and then one after training because this is when your body can really utilize the high quality nutrients found in these products. I will then eat 4 whole food meals throughout the rest of the day.

Thanks for your kind words and questions.
