The Question:

When doing the barbell shoulder press. Is it better to bring the bar to the front or to the rear. There is a running argument that bringing it to the rear can cause spinal injuries or pinched nerves

The Answer:

If a person has adequate flexibility and muscle balance, they will be able to do “behind the neck presses” without any problem. That is, as long as they don't hit their head when lowering the bar. I have heard of this happening and it can definitely create neck problems

Each person must decide if they can do an exercise properly. I have done a behind the neck push press with 396 pounds and have never had a problem. But, I also train my rotator muscles and work on the flexibility of my upper body. If you decide to try doing the shoulder presses from behind your head make sure that you don’t feel any pain during the exercise. If you do, you need to change to regular presses in front of your head. Then, work on your rotator muscle groups and flexibility of your upper body. After a month or so you could give it another shot! Remember, nothing is ever totally bad or totally good. It all depends on the individual! Thanks for your question
