The Question:

What types of foods should you eat before going to workout and how long should I wait before going. After a hard workout in the gym, what is a good meal to have and how long after the workout should I wait to eat?

The Answer:

Hello, How long you should wait after eating and before starting your workout is sort of an individual thing. It also depends on what exactly you will be doing in your exercise session. In general, you would like to keep your fat intake to a minimum prior to working out as fat slows the digestion process down. You should be eating foods that are primarily carbohydrate oriented with a little protein as well. Most people will need a good hour after eating but again, you may need more or slightly less time. After exercise you can be a little less picky with your food intake but you still should try to choose healthy foods. In some scientific literature it is recommended that eating 40-100 grams of carbohydrate and 15-25 grams of protein within 1 hour after training is the best for overall recovery. I personally like to drink a Met-Rx or Myoplex mixed with a little apple juice and a banana! But, that's just me! P.S. Don't forget about drinking water before, during, and after training. This is very important! Thanks for your question, Dan
