The Question:

Dan,I just have a question about the workout that was produced when I became a member of this site. Lately, me and a couple friends have been on a workout plan that consists of Day 1:Chest
Day 2:back
Day 3:Arms
Day 4:shoulders.

Whichever day we go to the gym in a week,we go in this order. I was wondering for your program,is there any way that I can modify the workouts so that I can keep the same routine,or is it just going to keep on telling me I should do chest with shoulders and so on? Thank you for your help Dan

The Answer:

What program are you on?
It helps me to know exactly which program you chose to answer your question. However, I understand that many people like to alternate their muscle groups around and at times work shoulders with back or back with chest etc. The most ideal situation is to train the shoulders with the chest. Both of these muscle groups require quite a bit of pressing oriented exercises to stimulate muscle growth and strength. If you did not train these muscle groups together and you trained 4 or more days per week you would end up pressing on the chest day and then pressing on the shoulder day etc.

I like to group my pressing days together because they work the same muscle groups (chest, shoulders, triceps). This is also why I like to train biceps with back. The biceps muscle group gets trained when you work your back so if you don't do your biceps on back day and you train them later in the week they end up getting trained too frequently. There are many neat ways to split up your training for the best results. At this time we are actually working on a module that will allow our more advanced members to split up their muscle groups in any way they would like. Instead of choosing a particular program you would just an actual goal (bodybuilding or strength and power), then each day you could choose your muscle group combinations like Hard Back and Easy Chest on day 1, or maybe Easy Legs, Hard Shoulders and Easy Biceps on day 3 etc.

For now, all of our programs that train with 4 days per week or more, follow the classic push/pull split. I have been training people for many years and have found that this is still the best overall way to group your muscles together.

Thank you very much for your question and stay tuned for more things from Fitrex. We have many, many more training "tricks" that will be developed in the months to come!
